‘A Revolver’ – Recently Discovered Carl Sandburg Poem Addresses Gun Lovers

Ernie Gullerud, 83, a former professor of social work at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, stumbled upon a previously unpublished poem by the great Carl Sandburg, a native of Chicago who received Pulitzer Prizes for his poetry in both 1919 and 1951 (as well as another for his biography of Abraham Lincoln in 1940). Gallerud was going through a file folders of poems to input into the school’s electronic system when he uncovered this astonishing find. From the Chicago Tribune:

Defying Stereotypes: Navy SEAL Team 6 Soldier Comes Out As Transgender In Powerful New Book

While gender transition can be fraught with emotional and societal challenges for anyone in any field, for a Navy SEAL, one of the most entrenched categories of the male identity, the conflict of dealing with gender issues while bound by both military culture and policy were particularly excruciating. Though the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell ended official discrimination against gays and lesbians in the military, it did not end the ban on transgender service members, which means transgender men or women are at risk of discharge if their status is discovered. For Beck, that meant hiding not only the external trappings of her femininity (panty hose were tucked way back in the drawer), but keeping any indication of her true gender from public view. And as a SEAL, that meant maintaining a look and performance that was in keeping with the “macho” man she was… and she did.

Top Ten Reasons Why Being A Woman In Politics Takes Balls

This is not a particularly new story, the “women have a harder time in (fill in the blank) industry” than men. No, issues of sexism and misogyny in the workplace are, frankly, weary memes that have been with us since time immemorial, but they do have a unique translation for women in politics. Particularly since “women in politics,” at least this country, is a relatively new phenomenon (don’t get me started on ancient matriarchal cultures), which allows for old behavioral habits to rule the roost, so to speak, at least until someone shuts that whole thing down.
